Are you eligible for direct entry to Bachelors in a German University?

Do you need to attend a Studienkolleg?

Your foreign school certificate or your previous qualification will determine whether you are eligible for direct entrance to for Bachelors in German University or you will need to attend a one-year preparatory course (Studienkolleg) and pass a university entrance exam (Feststellungsprüfung).

“anabin” database can be used to find out how your foreign school certificate or your previous qualification will be evaluated in Germany. The database is managed by German government’s Kultusministerkonferenz – Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen.

Note that the anabin database is not exhaustive. Therefore, it can be that your certificate/qualification is not yet listed by anabin. This doesn’t mean that your certificate will not be honored. It just means that no decision has been made yet.

How to check?

1. Go to https://anabin.kmk.org/anabin.html
2. Select the category “Schulabschlüsse mit Hochschulzugang” on the left
3. Search for your university degree via the search mask in the “Suchen” tab.
4. Select the country where you obtained your school certificate or the previous qualification.
5. When you have found your certificate/qualification name, open the record and by clicking on it.
6. Read under “Bewertung Schulabschluss” how your certificate/qualification will be evaluated in Germany.
7. If you are lucky, it would say “Direkter Zugang zu allen Hochschulen”, that is, you are eligible to apply for the bachelor’s degree course in Germany.

8. It is also possible that you may need to study one additional year before being able to apply for a bachelor’s degree course in Germany. This one year of study may be carried out at a Studienkolleg in Germany followed by a university entrance exam (Feststellungsprüfung).
   

9. You will find any additional conditions under “Weitere Bedingungen” (for example, a common additional requirement with many for foreign school certificates is a minimum of 50% marks in examinations)
