What makes Indians sad?
Honestly, people like me make many Indians sad.
A little background, I was born and brought up in India. In 2014, I moved to Germany for my Masters study and have been here since.
It was my first time in any foreign country and I was struck with awe initially when I landed. How everything worked diligently and in order without any disruptions. However, the newfound order sunk into me with time and I slowly became used to it.
Then I visited India after one and a half year in late 2015. Now, the moment I landed in Mumbai, I became a person that makes most Indian sad. I crib and complained about how chaotic things were.
From my perspective, living in Germany for short time made me realize, it was not the lack of infrastructure or the explosive population that was the root cause of chaos and corruption everywhere. It was the attitude of the people.
I confess, in a few daytime while visiting India, I was back being the way I was during my pre-Germany days. I would defy rules, find a way around, find ‘Jugaad’ for everything I could.
Now, that is another thing that makes most Indians sad, ‘The so-called NRIs pretend to follow rules when in a foreign country, yet when they come to India, they become like everyone else’. Let me tell you, I did try to follow rules, not bribe and do things as I did in Germany. The result? I was called dumb and stupid because I couldn’t find my way through and get something done. I was laughed at for wearing helmet or seat belt.
Now here are my thoughts, people who go abroad and then come back and complain don’t necessarily mean to insult India or Indians. They just wish to bring to light that things can be done in a better and more efficient way. If someone complains, look into the problem being spoken about, don’t discuss the person bringing up the problem. Unless, of course, if you are the Indian Media/News Channel.
