7 things Germans expect from you

A short summarization of what Germans expect from you from my experience and how to integrate in Germany:

Hair and Haircut matters

If you are a guy with a messy hair, make sure your hair stays in place always. You cannot find a single German’s hair out of place. Even if you go for a haircut, soon after the cut the barber would put gel on your head to make your hair stays like you’re going to attend a meeting. All Germans tend to be a perfectionist. (even in how their hair looks)

If you are a girl, the same rule applies. A big No to messy hair, unlike western cultures.

Perhaps if they see you that way, you will be misinterpreted as a homeless person 😛

Workout like beast

In India, not being in shape is fine and normal. But if you walk around here that way, you might start feeling uncomfortable because everyone around you will be so perfect. You can see an old woman of age 50 going for morning jogs with their smart Fitbit watches. You can see old men hiking around the beautiful mountains. So when I Talk about old, you would have already guessed how the young Germans would be.

Coming to our next favorite thing – Food

When it comes to Germans, they do not have much variety in food (No offense). They are more oriented towards eating healthy food rather than depending on junk food. But here French fries are not considered as junk, because they never forget to take that with their daily meal.

No bullshitting or hidden feelings!

If we are at any store in India, the shopkeeper would say all cheesy stuff to make the customer feel special. But do not expect that in Germany. Even if you are their customer they will be mean to you if you do something which they do not want you to do. For example, once my friend went shopping for a sweater. He picked up a sweater from the rack but later chose another sweater so left the old one on the rack without folding. It’s totally acceptable in India. But in Germany, they take it seriously. The billing counter lady frowned and refused to bill our purchases. Better avoid such situations.

Closed circles

Germans are very reserved when it comes to socializing. It can be especially difficult if you are an Auslander and are not proficient in the German language. However, if you break the ice and become a friend with German they would make a great companion. They would go out of their way to help you without thinking twice.

Think before signing!!

A big ‘WARNING’ before you sign any contracts in Germany. It is always easy to get into any contracts. But it is such a big process to get out of it. I have been there and done that a lot of times. So my advice would be to never sign any contract without thinking twice. All the contracts will be in German, so please take time to translate and read through the entire document. Because of laziness, we would neglect it. But trust me , later you would regret.

Trust them

Germans are really honest and trustworthy. For example, when you pay for something in any shop, do not worry about the change they give you. Germans never cheat. At least for me they never did.

SEE ALSO: Do not move to Germany if…

Overall, I believe that Germans are a perfectionist and they expect you also to behave that way in their country. Maybe this could be one of the reasons why I love being in Germany. You will learn to be punctual and Professional and a lot more 😉
